Lead Poisoning Awareness: Identify Sources, Prevent Exposure

Many people associate lead poisoning with industrial areas or old pipes, but the threat can also exist in ordinary household items. Paint, toys, cosmetics, jewellery and certain utensils may contain lead, making awareness an essential part of everyday safety.

According to the World Health Organization, lead exposure is responsible for more than 3.5 million deaths worldwide each year. The WHO has repeatedly raised concern about the continuing risks posed by this toxic metal.

Lead was once an ingredient in many commercial products, and its presence has not disappeared entirely. Dust from aging or damaged paint, contaminated soil and water, some ceramic cookware, counterfeit or unsafe jewellery, cosmetics and toys are among the possible sources. Spices and traditional medicines can also be affected by adulteration or contamination.

The effects of lead depend partly on age, but young children are at the greatest risk. Because their brains and nervous systems are still forming, lead can hamper mental development, reduce learning capacity and alter behaviour. Repeated low-level exposure can accumulate and cause lasting problems.

Hand-to-mouth behaviour is common among young children, and this can transfer lead-contaminated dust or soil into their bodies. Pregnant women and their unborn babies are also vulnerable, since lead exposure during pregnancy may cause harm.

Adults face their own risks. Long-term exposure has been linked to kidney and heart problems, and it can affect multiple organ systems. The danger lies partly in the fact that symptoms are not always immediate. Often, the harm is identified only after it has already taken place.

The WHO's theme for International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2026 is 'From Identification to Prevention.' The campaign emphasises identifying lead sources and working to eliminate them.

Practical steps can reduce exposure significantly. Clean household dust with wet cloths or mops to avoid spreading particles. Refrain from removing old paint by hand, as this can release harmful dust. Keep toys that are broken or lack safety certification away from children. If there are concerns about drinking water, have it tested. When selecting cosmetics, utensils and other products, pay close attention to their quality and safety standards.
