Large Cash Haul Discovered at Howrah Station, Investigation Ongoing

A Howrah railway station patrol on Sunday night resulted in the seizure of cash worth approximately ₹6.7 million. The Railway Protection Force detained Sujit Kale after a brief observation suggested his activities were not ordinary.

Kale, who hails from Solapur in Maharashtra, told officials he was heading to Kolkata to buy gold and silver at Burrabazar. He could not present any paperwork or a believable source for the money, leading officers to confiscate the cash and place him under arrest.

The case has been forwarded to the Income Tax Department, which will continue the probe. The crackdown aligns with heightened security measures before the Durga Puja celebrations and the impending by‑elections scheduled for October 6 in Nandigram and Rashbehari.

Railway and metro authorities have increased monitoring, and highway checkpoints are operational to deter the flow of large cash sums into areas where elections are imminent.
