Koyambatur Tragedy: Water Tank Accident Claims Five Lives on NH-83

A devastating crash claimed five lives on the NH‑83 corridor near Nallampalli Pirivu in Koyambatur district on Sunday afternoon. The vehicle involved was a Maruti Selerio that struck a water tank placed centrally on the road for irrigation purposes. The force of the collision caused catastrophic damage, killing all five passengers on board.

Identified victims include local residents Kanagaraj, Poornani, Narmatha, Aarti and Raman, aged 35, from Madukkarai Market’s MLA Street. Following the incident, the corpses were transferred to the Polachi government hospital for post‑mortem examinations and legal formalities.

The district police superintendent, along with the sub‑inspector of Polachi sub‑division and the Gomangalam police inspector, arrived promptly, secured the crash site and commenced a forensic investigation. Legal proceedings have been initiated, and officials are examining the legality of the tank’s placement, road signage, and driver conduct.

The tragic event has raised concerns about the safety of roadside infrastructure and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations in Tamil Nadu.
