Following the tragic deaths of five women during childbirth in Kota, Rajasthan authorities have launched a sweeping investigation into a batch of oxytocin injections found to be substandard. The Central Drug Laboratory confirmed that the samples contained no active oxytocin, prompting the immediate seizure of remaining stock from hospitals and the supplier. Health Secretary Gayatri Rathore confirmed disciplinary action against the manufacturer and a complete ban on the affected batch across the state. While the findings have raised serious concerns about drug quality control, medical specialists stress that oxytocin deficiency alone is unlikely to cause the complications seen in the victims. One patient reportedly died from kidney failure without ever receiving the injection. An expert team from AIIMS Delhi has been deployed to Kota to assess whether other medications or systemic issues contributed to the fatalities. The probe now focuses on tracing the full distribution of the defective batch and ensuring no further risks to patients.
