Kolkata Shocker: Man and Father Forced Naked on Street, 3 Arrested
A disturbing case of public humiliation has emerged from the southern fringes of Kolkata, where a youth and his father were allegedly stripped and made to walk naked in front of people because of a love affair. The case has created unrest in the Basundhara Park area of Sarsuna police station limits.
The incident has spread fear and anger among residents. Following the episode, tension gripped the locality and people have voiced strong outrage.
On Monday, Kolkata Police informed that three individuals, including the girl's father and uncle, have been arrested in the case.
The youth was in a relationship with a girl who lives in Behala's Sarsuna area. Her family had reportedly opposed the relationship from the start. On Sunday, when the girl's relatives allegedly discovered the couple together in an objectionable position, the matter escalated into violence.
It is alleged that the girl's father and uncle confined the youth in a house and thrashed him brutally. The youth's father was then brought to the scene. The most alarming allegation is that the girl's relatives gave the father a firearm and asked him to shoot his son.
According to police, the family gave the youth two options: death, or walking naked on the street. Both he and his father were then forced to walk in the open in front of everyone.
Reports also state that a friend of the youth was attacked and insulted in the same manner.
A senior Kolkata Police officer said the arrests followed a complaint lodged by the youth's family. Cases have been filed under the applicable sections. The three accused are scheduled to be produced in court and police will request their custody for further inquiry.
Local residents are shocked and furious. As word of the assault and public disgrace spread, a crowd collected and vandalised the girl's residence. Sarsuna police reached the site after receiving information. As the situation worsened, the girl's father and other relatives fled.
The crowd nonetheless caught the girl's uncle, assaulted him and handed him to police. The neighbourhood remains on edge. Police sources said the girl's father and another person were detained late on Sunday night.
Locals claimed that the girl's family had earlier enjoyed close ties with local TMC leaders, which they allege made the family arrogant. They have demanded the severest punishment for the accused.
Social activist Sashwati Ghosh raised questions about both the perpetrators and the witnesses present. She said those who carried out the act were mentally unstable and questioned whether the onlookers were enjoying the incident or had opposed it. She urged that this too must be investigated.
