Key Parachute System Validation Boosts Confidence in India’s First Crewed Flight

On July 10, ISRO concluded a vital validation of the main parachute that will protect the Gaganyaan crew module on its return from orbit. The test, conducted at Shypur’s Aeronautical Development and Research Establishment, employed an IL‑76 aircraft to release a full‑scale parachute package over a 2.5 km drop.

After the drogue chute’s rapid deployment, the main canopy took over, decelerating the dummy payload smoothly to the ground. Results matched the stringent criteria set for the unmanned Gaganyaan‑1 flight, demonstrating robustness under simulated maximum‑load conditions.

With five successful IMAT trials now on record, the parachute system’s reliability is firmly established, paving the way for the crewed mission’s final preparations.
