Key Measures in NCW’s Cab Safety Framework: Panic Buttons, Alerts and Driver Verification
The NCW’s newly published safety framework outlines a series of mandatory actions for app‑based cab operators. Central to the plan is the installation of a physical panic button that passengers can activate in emergencies, triggering an instant response from a dedicated control centre.
Real‑time route monitoring will alert both the rider and the aggregator if the vehicle deviates from the booked path. The system will also keep an eye on prolonged stops or stops at locations flagged as high‑risk, sending automatic notifications to the command centre.
Driver verification is another cornerstone of the guidelines. Aggregators must verify driver identities through an in‑app system that displays a clear, high‑resolution photograph of the driver, as stipulated in clause 14.9 of the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025. Any alteration to driver or vehicle details must be logged and treated as a potential security issue.
The commission also encourages the creation of a verified pool of female drivers, giving solo female passengers the option to request a woman driver via the app. Night‑time operations are to be monitored more closely, with enhanced verification for drivers working during late hours.
