Kerala Probe Widens in Kadavumbhagam Synagogue Arson Case
Kochi: A major development has emerged in the arson case near the Kadavumbhagam Synagogue in Ernakulam, Kerala. Police have registered charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against the main accused, Abin Paul, as they investigate whether the fire was part of a larger plot.
Sections 16 and 18 of the UAPA have been applied. These sections pertain to terrorist activities and conspiracy to carry them out. The new charges came after the October 12 attack on a nursery outside the synagogue, a historic Jewish prayer site in the state.
A Special Investigation Team is looking into the claim that Abin acted on the orders of an unknown handler referred to as 'Boss'. The accused has also mentioned a person named Vikram. Police are verifying Vikram's identity and any possible connection he may have with 'Boss'.
Investigators want to know if the alleged handler is a real individual based abroad and whether anyone else was part of the planning.
The accused has told police that he received instructions via phone calls and digital platforms. Forensic experts are examining his mobile phone and other electronic devices to confirm these claims. Officials believe digital data will help clarify the nature of the conversations, identify those involved, and determine whether the accused was paid to carry out the attacks.
The investigation has also expanded after police connected Abin to several other arson incidents. Authorities are now assessing whether these events were related and whether they formed a planned series of attacks.
To understand his background and possible contacts, the SIT has extended its probe to Pune, where Abin was studying. Police are checking whether any external network influenced his actions or issued instructions to him.
The National Investigation Agency and other central agencies have already gathered information on the case. Because the synagogue holds historical significance for Kerala's Jewish heritage, the matter has attracted attention beyond the state. Police are now focused on identifying the alleged handler, confirming digital leads, and determining the motive behind the attack.
