AI, ageing and climate: key themes at Kerala’s future‑planning summit

Day one of the IIM Kozhikode workshop saw intensive sessions on the most pressing disruptive forces confronting Kerala. Experts highlighted the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and its implications for public services, the need for a robust response to a steadily ageing citizenry, and the growing urgency of climate‑related risks.

Panelists examined how AI can enhance governance, improve health outcomes and streamline economic activities, while also addressing ethical considerations. The demographic shift toward an older population prompted proposals for a "Silver Economy" strategy, aiming to harness the purchasing power and experience of senior citizens while mitigating fiscal pressures.

Climate change discussions centred on coastal erosion, flood management and the integration of resilient infrastructure in future development plans. Public health specialists stressed the importance of building a statewide wellness ecosystem that can respond to emerging health threats and promote preventive care.

These thematic tracks were complemented by insights from international scholars, including a professor from Keio University in Japan and an associate professor from King’s College London, who shared comparative perspectives on technology adoption and demographic transition.
