Kerala's 2026‑27 'Snehasantwanam' scheme to boost support for affected families

In a move that underscores the state’s commitment to environmental justice, Kerala’s UDF administration has approved a 14.40 crore rupee budget for the "Snehasantwanam" comprehensive rehabilitation package for Endosulfan victims in Kasaragod.

The allocation, approved by the Chief Minister’s Office and routed through the Social Justice Department, targets uninterrupted aid for the 5,208 families already on the relief list, allocating 9.84 crore rupees for them. An additional 2.64 crore rupees will fund roughly 1,000 new beneficiaries added to the roster.

Under the companion "Ashvasakiranam" scheme, 771 community caregivers will receive regular financial assistance amounting to 64.76 lakh rupees, ensuring that those who tend to the victims are themselves supported.

Educational assistance is also a priority. The government will provide 10.05 lakh rupees to sponsor the schooling of 400 children during the 2026‑27 academic session. Meanwhile, 1.17 crore rupees will be spent upgrading ten model child rehabilitation centres, enhancing both physical infrastructure and service quality.

Endosulfan, a highly toxic pesticide, was sprayed from aircraft over Kasaragod’s cashew plantations for many years, leading to severe health complications among residents. After prolonged advocacy, the state’s latest financial commitment aims to deliver lasting economic stability, health care, and rehabilitation to both longstanding and newly recognised victims.
