Police Nab Two Suspects Who Snatched Gold From Elderly Women
Police in Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh have arrested two men accused of robbing elderly women, after a shootout in the early hours of Saturday.
The operation was conducted jointly by Kaushambi Kotwali police station and the SOG. Both suspects sustained gunshot wounds in their legs during the encounter and were taken into custody on the spot.
Both injured suspects are receiving treatment at the district hospital. Recovered items include two illegal pistols, cartridges, two gold nose pins linked to the robberies, and a bike that did not carry a number plate.
According to DSP Arun Kumar Shukla, the arrested individuals are Mohammad Farooq and Naeem Akhtar, residents of the Khakhreru area in Fatehpur district. Investigators say the pair singled out elderly women in the Medraha and Bhairwan villages of Kaushambi. They allegedly snatched gold nose pins from the women and fled the scene. Police had been trying to trace them since these incidents were reported.
A joint team from the Kotwali police and SOG obtained information about the suspects on Saturday morning and set up a cordon. The accused reportedly fired at the team after realising they were trapped, and the police returned fire. Both men were hit in the legs and arrested.
According to the DSP, more than half a dozen criminal cases have been registered against the two. Police are gathering their past criminal records and examining whether they carried out other similar robberies in Kaushambi and surrounding districts.
The accused are being questioned to uncover their network and possible involvement in other looting incidents. Officials said further legal action will be initiated after the investigation is complete.
