Katyuri Architecture Shines at Gomti River Baijanath Temple

The Baijanath Temple, perched on the banks of the Gomti River in Bageshwar, is a living museum of Katyuri craftsmanship. Constructed circa 1150 AD, the temple reflects the dynasty's penchant for elaborate stone carving and grandiose design.

The main sanctum houses Shiva and a uniquely sculpted Parvati figure on a dark stone slab, an uncommon pairing in Hindu temples. Surrounding the primary shrine are seventeen additional stone temples honoring deities such as Ganesha, Kartikeya, Brahma, Sun, Kubera and Garuda. The site is revered as the mythic location where Shiva and Parvati wed, near the confluence of Gomti and Garud Ganga, adding a layer of mythic significance to its architectural grandeur.
