Karnataka threatens legal challenge to CWRC order on Cauvery

Bengaluru, July 29 – The Karnataka administration announced plans to contest the recent CWRC ruling that mandates Tamil Nadu to release 3,500 cusecs of Cauvery water daily. The state cited a severe shortfall in rainfall and dwindling reservoir stocks as key reasons for opposing the order.

According to official sources, the government will approach the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to seek a review of the directive. Officials highlighted that the current arrangement could significantly impact the drinking‑water supply for millions in Bengaluru and other Cauvery‑dependent districts.

The move follows criticism from opposition leaders who claim the ruling reflects the state’s inability to mount an effective legal defence despite allocating ₹300 crore for counsel fees. Karnataka officials reaffirmed their commitment to defending the state’s water rights and safeguarding public welfare.
