Justice Bhatta Charya Sets Conditions for Trinamool Student Council Founding Day Events

Justice Sougata Bhatta‑Chatterjee of the Kolkata High Court issued a detailed order on Tuesday that allows both wings of the Trinamool Congress to mark the anniversary of the Trinamool Student Council, but under tightly controlled circumstances. The order denies any faction the right to occupy Mayo Road, the traditional spot for the ceremony, and instead earmarks two alternative venues: Cathedral Road for the faction headed by former chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, and Rani Rashmoni Road for the larger, Rittabrata Banerjee‑led breakaway group. Key provisions include a strict cap of 1,500 participants per event, a fixed time window from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., and an obligation for Kolkata police to arrange comprehensive security. Both parties must furnish the names of fifteen volunteers to the police joint commissioner no later than 6 p.m. on the day following the order. Furthermore, the court mandates that the events be confined to a single traffic lane on the designated roads, keeping the opposite lane open for regular vehicular movement.
