Judge Tirthankar Ghosh Dismisses Bail Plea Amid Ongoing Probe of College Fund Misuse

In a recent hearing, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court rejected the anticipatory bail petition submitted by Devashish Bandyopadhyay, a senior Trinamool leader implicated in the Surendranath College fund graft case.

The state’s advocate warned that an early release could affect witness statements and the collection of forensic evidence. He highlighted Bandyopadhyay’s reputed influence in the region, suggesting that his freedom might create pressure on the investigative process.

The court observed that the probe is still in its early stages, involving a search that uncovered a weapon and two cash‑laden suitcases within the college premises. Charges under the Arms Act, criminal trespass, criminal intimidation, and provisions protecting public property have been filed against two TMC officials as well.

After weighing the arguments, Justice Ghosh dismissed the bail plea, allowing the investigation to proceed without obstruction.
