Joint Effort of Navy, Merchant Ship Saves Fisherman in Open Sea
The Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet, together with a passing merchant vessel, successfully rescued a fisherman whose boat went adrift near Visakhapatnam. The fisherman was initially rescued by the merchant ship on July 5, 2026, after his own vessel disappeared in the open sea.
Responding to an appeal from the civil administration, a navy helicopter launched a dedicated air‑rescue on the following day. Hovering over the merchant ship, crew members used a rescue hoist—complete with a specially designed rope and lifting mechanism—to transfer the fisherman safely into the aircraft.
Aboard the helicopter, a medical team conducted a thorough health assessment, administered emergency care, and cleared the survivor for transport. The helicopter then returned to Visakhapatnam, where the navy handed the fisherman over to civil authorities after completing all procedural requirements.
The operation showcases the high level of skill, coordination, and training required for maritime rescue missions, reaffirming the navy’s commitment to protecting lives at sea.
