Joint Assam Rifles‑Customs raid busts 501‑kg weed cache in North‑East India
In a joint operation conducted on Thursday evening, Assam Rifles and the Customs department intercepted a 501‑kilogram cache of dried cannabis in Tripura’s Khawai district. The raid was the result of a focused intelligence drive and meticulous monitoring of cross‑border movements. Pursuers followed a suspect vehicle from the western side of Sonatala, eventually losing it near Baikhuntpur after covering roughly 18 kilometres.
While the driver managed to flee, the team recovered the narcotics, valued at about ₹2.5 million, and handed them over to customs officials for forensic testing and court proceedings. No immediate arrests were made. This seizure adds to a previous operation on 6 October that netted 340 kilograms of cannabis worth ₹1.74 crore, reflecting a persistent crackdown on drug trafficking networks that exploit the porous borders of the North‑East.
