Joint Army Exercise Begins in Kerala with Focus on Coastal Operations

A joint military exercise between India and Australia is underway in Kerala, with troops training in jungle, island and seashore environments. The programme, called Austra Hind 2026, is being held in Thiruvananthapuram and will continue until November 1.

Soldiers from both armies are taking part in large numbers, with 120 personnel from each side. The exercise includes combat swimming, fixed-rope descents, ambush operations and drone handling.

The Army reported on Thursday that physical training is also being carried out to raise the fitness levels of the personnel involved.

The exercise seeks to strengthen the combat readiness of soldiers who must operate in diverse terrain. It also aims to sharpen their skills in working together effectively during missions.

The jungle, island and coastal training gives troops exposure to a wide range of tactical situations. Combat swimming equips them to conduct water-based military activities, while controlled rope descents help them move rapidly to target locations.

Ambush drills prepare personnel to carry out operations with strategic planning. Drone operations reflect the growing role of advanced technology in military activity. Physical endurance remains a core element of the training.

Austra Hind 2026 is contributing to better tactical skills, operational readiness and cooperation between Indian and Australian forces. It is also helping to build confidence among personnel and deepen India-Australia defence ties.

The primary focus is on improving joint operational capacity in coastal and island areas. Soldiers are working on joint planning, tactical movements and operations simulating wartime conditions. Air and maritime dimensions will be integrated into the training to improve coordination across different scenarios.

The Indian Army team includes troops from the Garhwal Rifles and personnel from other arms and services. The Australian Army's 13th Brigade is providing its soldiers for the exercise.
