Tragedy struck Khandkhori village in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district as a 47-year-old woman, Shuru Gop, fell victim to the scourge of witch-hunting. She was found dead with her throat slit in a forest area on Monday morning. The local police have apprehended the suspect, Puduwa Sinku, who reportedly murdered the woman because he believed she was practicing black magic. The suspect was reportedly convinced that the health issues plaguing his children were a direct result of the victim’s supposed sorcery. The incident unfolded on Sunday night while the victim's husband was away in Odisha attending a social gathering. Puduwa Sinku allegedly arrived at the victim's residence and convinced her to accompany him to consume local liquor. The victim’s children later recounted hearing a scream but were too frightened to leave the safety of their home. When the family returned later that night and found Shuru missing, a frantic search began, which ended in the discovery of her lifeless body by her son the next morning. Authorities from the Kumardungi police station arrived promptly at the site to begin their forensic investigation. After collecting evidence and recording testimonies from the family members, the police focused their suspicion on Sinku. Following a brief interrogation, the suspect was arrested and taken into custody. This case once again highlights the persistent challenge of superstition in rural Jharkhand, where innocent individuals are often targeted due to baseless beliefs. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the law and are conducting a thorough probe to ensure justice and prevent future occurrences of such horrific crimes.
