Residents Evacuated after Underground Mining Linked to Dhanbad Land Subsidence

Authorities say the sudden land subsidence in Loyabad’s Muslim Basti appears linked to past underground mining operations. The area, historically connected to BCCL’s Shindrabasti Colliery, has been prone to ground movement, but the recent 30‑foot collapse marked an unprecedented event.

Four houses collapsed, prompting a swift evacuation of all families residing in the immediate vicinity. Rescue teams managed to extract the occupants safely, relocating them to a nearby community hall.

Residents reported feeling continuous tremors before the collapse, indicating a possibly gradual weakening of the substrata. The fear of additional sinkholes has led to heightened anxiety throughout the settlement.
