Resource Utilization and Local Value Addition Key to Jharkhand’s Growth

Former Rajya Sabha member Dr. Mahesh Poddar underscored that Jharkhand’s greatest economic strength lies in its mineral endowment, but warned that a mining‑centric model limits the state’s full potential. He called for systematic local processing of minerals, development of technical expertise, and expansion into new markets.

Poddar suggested that the state should channel a portion of its DMF allocations toward projects that enhance the value chain of raw materials, thereby generating higher revenue and more employment. He also emphasized better governance of natural resources such as sand, which could become a steady source of income if managed responsibly.

The discussion also covered the need for stronger fiscal discipline, ensuring that any debt incurred for infrastructure is matched by robust revenue‑generation mechanisms.
