Ranchi: On World Stroke Day, Sadar Hospital in Ranchi organised an awareness programme for health personnel at its Neurosurgery Department on Thursday. The initiative highlighted the importance of recognising stroke symptoms early and seeking treatment without delay.

Speaking at the event, neurosurgeon Dr Vikas Kumar described stroke as a condition in which blood supply to a portion of the brain is obstructed or bleeding occurs inside the brain. He stressed that any delay in treatment after symptoms appear may result in permanent disability or death.

Dr Kumar identified the major signs of stroke as one side of the face drooping, sudden weakness or numbness in arms or legs, difficulty speaking or understanding others, and sudden problems in seeing or walking. He advised that anyone showing these signs should be rushed to a hospital immediately rather than being treated at home.

He also pointed out that high blood pressure, diabetes, tobacco use, high cholesterol, obesity, and lack of physical activity are significant risk factors. Regular health screening, a balanced diet, physical exercise, and keeping blood pressure and blood sugar under control can help lower the risk.

Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr Bimlesh Singh said the programme aims to boost the efficiency of health workers so that they can deliver messages about stroke prevention and quick treatment to ordinary people.

Civil Surgeon Dr Amrendra Kumar, doctors from various departments, and health workers were present at the event.
