The monsoon season, which has so far delivered below‑average rainfall for Jharkhand, took a sudden turn on Tuesday when several districts recorded sharp spikes in precipitation. While the overall monsoon total up to 18 August is 12 % less than normal, Ranchi recorded 713.4 mm—just 1 % below its historical average. Other districts such as Bokaro, Chaibasa, Deoghar and Dhanbad also saw deficits ranging from 9 % to 50 %. Despite the shortfall, the concentrated rain event caused river levels to rise rapidly, leading to waterlogging in residential colonies, school closures, and traffic snarls across the city.
