Love Marriage Sparks Controversy as Parents Conduct Posthumous Rites for Their Daughter

A love marriage between Sandhya Kumari of the Pandey family and Vivek Kumar, a youth from the same village but a different caste, has ignited a sharp controversy in Pandey Tola, Giddhaur block, Chhatar district. Upset by the union, the girl’s relatives staged a symbolic pindadaan ceremony on Friday, treating her as if she had died.

The ceremony, conducted according to Hindu tradition, featured the placement of Sandhya’s photograph and a life‑like effigy, with rites performed by a Brahmin district official, extended relatives, and a sizeable gathering of locals.

The parents announced a total disassociation from Sandhya, stating that her choice inflicted deep emotional distress and that they will not maintain any future contact. The newly married couple has remained silent on the matter.

The incident reflects broader societal struggles over caste, marriage autonomy, and family honor in rural India.
