Jharkhand Weather: Yellow and Orange Alerts Amid Cyclonic Storm

A cyclonic storm forming over the Bay of Bengal could significantly alter weather patterns in Jharkhand between October 27 and 30. The Meteorological Department has warned of rain, strong winds and lightning in various parts of the state during this period.

Alert Levels by Date

The weather agency has placed yellow alerts on October 27 and October 30. Orange alerts have been declared for October 28 and 29 because of the likelihood of heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning across several districts.

Tracking the Low-Pressure Area

The low-pressure area in the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is currently about 440 kilometres north-northwest of Sri Vijayapuram in the Andaman Islands. It is also roughly 880 kilometres east-southeast of Visakhapatnam, 980 kilometres east-southeast of Kakinada, 1,080 kilometres east of Machilipatnam and 1,150 kilometres east of Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh.

The system is likely to transform first into a deep depression and then move west-northwest. A cyclonic storm is considered highly probable by the morning of October 26. Intensification into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal is expected by the morning of October 27.

According to the forecast, the storm will continue moving north-west and may become an extremely severe cyclonic storm. It is expected to reach the west-central Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of October 28. Before noon, the storm is likely to cross the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, including the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts.

During landfall, sustained winds may reach 115 to 125 kilometres per hour, with gusts potentially hitting 140 kilometres per hour.

Impact on Jharkhand

Rain activity in Jharkhand is likely to start on October 27. Yellow alert conditions for rain have been flagged for several districts on that day. On October 28 and 29, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and lightning is expected in many districts, which is why the orange alert has been issued. Rain is likely to persist on October 30, and a yellow alert is in place for that date.

Over the previous 24 hours, Jagannathpur in West Singhbhum recorded the state's highest temperature at 35 degrees Celsius. Latehar had the lowest at 12.1 degrees Celsius.
