Jharkhand Boosts Medical Education With Rising MBBS Seat Count
Medical education in Jharkhand is expanding, with a steady rise in MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges. The development is creating new avenues for students from the state who wish to build careers in medicine.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the health department said the state's MBBS seats have increased threefold in seven years. Departmental figures show 580 seats in 2019-20, rising to 1,650 seats in the financial year 2026-27.
The release highlighted the role of several government institutions in the state's medical education system. RIMS in Ranchi, Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad, MGM Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur, and the medical colleges of Dumka, Palamu and Hazaribagh are all playing an important part. The expansion of MBBS seats at these centres is already benefiting students.
Health Minister Irfan Ansari said that expanding medical education and strengthening healthcare services are central to the government's agenda. He said the government wants more students to pursue medicine within their own state and hopes to increase the number of doctors available in the future.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department Ajay Kumar Singh stressed that more seats must be supported by better teaching systems, improved hospital infrastructure, adequate medical resources and high-quality training.
