Jharkhand's traditions set for national intangible cultural heritage list; Ranchi University experts invited

An effort is under way to place Jharkhand's folk arts, music, dance, folk theatre, traditional crafts and oral traditions on the national intangible cultural heritage list. A state-level meeting has been called for October 15 at the MDI building in Dhurwa, and the process follows the domains set out in UNESCO's 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Two Ranchi University faculty members have been invited: Avinash Kumar, assistant professor of archaeology and museology, who will advise on documenting ancient traditions, and dance teacher Vipul Nayak, who will speak on preserving traditional dance forms and folk theatre.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Saroj Sharma called it a matter of pride, saying Jharkhand's folk art and heritage are extremely rich and the university's role in winning them national recognition is important.
