Jharkhand Family Tragedy: Smoke Inhalation Kills Toddler, Injures Three

A winter warmth measure backfired catastrophically in Dumka district, resulting in the death of a young child and severe injuries to three relatives. The incident took place at the residence of Prakash Singh in Bahra Bhand village. To combat freezing temperatures, the family ignited a traditional indoor fire pit late at night.

As the night progressed, the lack of adequate ventilation caused toxic fumes to accumulate rapidly. By morning, the locked bedroom contained a suffocating atmosphere that left the sleeping occupants severely poisoned. Relatives grew alarmed when the door remained unopened past typical waking hours and forcibly broke it down to check on the family.

Emergency responders and local medics found four unconscious individuals inside the confined space. Six-year-old Nikki Kumari could not be saved and was officially declared dead after clinical assessment. Her mother, Reena Devi, along with sisters Rupal Kumari and an eleven-day-old baby, required immediate hospitalization.

The critical patients are currently under observation at the Fulo Jhano Medical College Hospital in Dumka. Doctors are administering advanced respiratory treatments to manage the severe smoke inhalation effects. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials from the district police have cordoned off the area, gathered forensic evidence, and begun documenting the case for further legal proceedings.
