High Court Faces Petitions Over Jharkhand's Exam Cancellation Decision

After the Jharkhand government ordered the cancellation of twenty‑two competitive exams, the affected candidates have turned to the judiciary. A group of 2,394 newly appointed officers submitted petitions to the Jharkhand High Court, arguing that the decision was taken without individual fault assessment and that it breaches the doctrine of natural justice.

Legal counsel for the petitioners contended that if any irregularities existed, they should be investigated and only the culpable individuals penalised, not an entire cohort that has been serving for months. The High Court’s upcoming hearing will determine whether the state’s sweeping action can stand, or whether compensation and reinstatement will be mandated. Parallel to the legal battle, the state has formed a ‘Exam Reform Committee’ chaired by IAS officer Amitabh Kaushal, tasked with drafting transparent examination guidelines within two months.
