Heavy Rains Predicted on India's 80th Independence Day in 19 Regions
The nation is set to mark its 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026 with patriotic fervour, but the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an alarm about extensive monsoon activity that could dampen celebrations across 19 states. A low‑pressure cell over the Bay of Bengal, paired with vigorous south‑west monsoon winds, is projected to deliver continuous rainfall from Delhi‑NCR down to the southern tip of India.
**Delhi‑NCR Forecast** The iconic flag‑raising at the Red Fort may take place under light to moderate rain. IMD assigns a 60 % likelihood of drizzle between 06:00 hrs and 09:00 hrs, followed by intermittent thunderstorms throughout the day. Maximum temperature is expected to be around 33 °C, with a minimum near 25 °C, and high humidity will make the weather feel sticky.
Intermittent showers are likely to continue in the capital and surrounding districts until at least 19 August. Event‑goers are advised to carry umbrellas or raincoats.
**Uttar Pradesh – Heavy‑Rain Warning for 30 Districts** Monsoon currents are fully active across both the eastern and western halves of Uttar Pradesh. Rain has already begun in Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Prayagraj. IMD predicts heavy rainfall in 19 specific districts – Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Saharanpur, Bijnor, Amroha, Muradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Sambhal, Badaun, Mahoba and Lalitpur – while an overall heavy‑rain alert covers about 30 districts. Low‑lying areas face a risk of water‑logging and lightning.
**Madhya Pradesh – 21 Districts Under Heavy‑Rain Alert** The eastern belt of Madhya Pradesh is under the influence of a strong monsoon system that will remain active for the next four days. Jabalpur, Rewa, Sagar and Shahdol divisions are most vulnerable, with Narmadapuram, Chhatarpur and Umaria expected to receive 4‑8 inches of rain.
**Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh – Orange Alerts for Hill Zones** Intense rain in the Himalayan states could trigger landslides and road blockages. Uttarakhand’s Dehradun, Nainital, Champawat and Pithoragarh are on orange alert, with over 100 villages in Pithoragarh cut off due to closed routes. Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla, Kangra, Kullu and Mandi have also received orange alerts, and tourists are cautioned to avoid vulnerable valleys.
**Bihar & Jharkhand – Monsoon Fully Engaged** Orange alerts are active for West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan and Saran in Bihar, while a yellow warning covers districts such as Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Vaishali, Sitamarhi, Shivhar, Madhubani, Buxar, Bhojpur, Khagaria, Rohtas, Arwal and Aurangabad. Strong winds up to 50 km/h are possible.
**Rajasthan – Yellow Alert for 17 Districts** Rain will persist in eastern and northern Rajasthan. Jaipur, Alwar, Bharatpur, Kota, Sikar and Jhunjhunu are under a yellow alert with wind gusts of 30‑40 km/h and occasional thunderstorms. Light showers are possible in Bikaner and Jodhpur.
**Maharashtra & Gujarat – Mixed Coastal and Interior Weather** Heavy‑rain warnings are in effect for Nagpur, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Amravati, Bhandara and Gondia. Pune, Satara, Kolhapur and Nasik’s hill zones will see moderate to heavy rain, while the Konkan coast (Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri) may experience light to moderate showers.
In Gujarat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Bharuch, Gandhinagar and Navsari are expected to face heavy rain and strong winds, whereas Saurashtra and Kutch will stay relatively calm.
**South & North‑East India – Broad‑Scale Rainfall Warnings** Kerala’s coastal districts and the coastal belt of Karnataka are likely to receive very heavy rain. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema will see moderate rain with wind speeds of 40‑50 km/h and occasional squalls. Fishermen are advised to stay away from the sea.
In the North‑East, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya are expected to experience localized downpours that could cause landslides and flash floods. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also under thunderstorm alerts.
The forecast suggests that India’s Independence Day celebrations will be marked by continuous rain, sporadic thunderstorms, and an increased threat of flooding across 19 states.
