Gumla Tragedy: Herd Kills Farmer Trying to Drive Elephants Away

A tragic incident in Gumla district has once again highlighted the growing conflict between humans and wildlife in Jharkhand. A group of elephants killed a 40-year-old farmer who had gone to protect his field from the animals.

Nicholas Topno, a resident of Buruhatu village under Sarita panchayat, died in the Kamdara block area. He had gone to his farmland to stop the herd from damaging his crops when the elephants turned on him.

Forest Department personnel have begun probing the matter after reaching the location.

How the Incident Unfolded

People at the scene reported that the herd encircled Nicholas without warning. Other villagers tried to reach him but arrived too late to save his life, as the elephants crushed him. News of the death spread quickly, and locals immediately informed the Forest Department.

The Forest Department and Kamdara police station personnel later took the body into possession and launched an investigation into the death.

Rising Fear in Villages

For about a week, a herd of more than 24 elephants has been repeatedly entering farmland and residential areas. The herd has caused severe losses to crops in nearby fields. Farmers have been adopting different measures to chase the animals away, but the situation has remained tense.

The death has deepened fear in neighboring villages, where residents now live in constant worry.

Compensation and Public Advisory

The Forest Department team provided Rs 1 lakh in immediate compensation to Nicholas Topno's wife. Officials have urged residents not to approach the herd or disturb the elephants in any way. People have also been asked to inform the department immediately if the herd is seen anywhere in the area.
