Dowry Harassment Allegations Surface as Court Dismisses Husband’s Petition
During the proceedings, the wife revealed that after the marriage she faced relentless pressure from her in‑laws for additional dowry. When the demanded amount of two lakh rupees was not met, she was labeled mentally unstable and subjected to continuous harassment.
The testimony also disclosed that her father had transferred one lakh rupees to the husband’s account, yet the demand for extra dowry persisted. On 10 July 2017, the husband left the marital home and filed for divorce the following day, citing the alleged mental health issue as a pretext.
The High Court, after evaluating these statements, concluded that the husband’s claim was a strategic move to escape his financial obligations. The court affirmed that the wife’s allegations of dowry‑related harassment were credible and that the husband could not leverage unproven mental‑health accusations to obtain a divorce.
