Following the encounter on August 11th where Surya Hansda was killed, the BJP is demanding a CBI investigation. Jharkhand BJP leader Babulal Marandi announced that the party would stage protests across 216 blocks of the state on September 11th, advocating for a CBI inquiry into Hansda’s death, which they are calling a staged encounter. The Congress party has criticized the BJP’s demand, suggesting the BJP is politicizing the matter.
Surya Hansda was killed in an encounter on the evening of August 11th. He had more than a dozen cases registered against him in various police stations, including charges of murder, dacoity, and kidnapping. Hansda had also contested elections multiple times, running for the Borio assembly constituency in 2014 (JVM), 2019 (BJP), and 2024 (JKLM) without success.
Babulal Marandi stated that the party would hold protests throughout the state to oppose the encounter. BJP alleges that Hansda, a social activist and voice against mining mafias, was not killed in an encounter but murdered at the government’s behest. The BJP has stated they previously raised the issue in the assembly and will now take it to the streets, accusing the government of oppressing tribals and forcibly acquiring their land for the construction of RIMS-2. The BJP is also demanding the return of this land to the tribal farmers.
The BJP is protesting on these two issues. Following increasing pressure, the Jharkhand CID has taken over the investigation. The National Human Rights Commission has also taken cognizance of the matter. Surya’s wife, Sushila Murmu, has called the encounter fake and demanded a CBI investigation from the High Court.
