Bedroom Fire Kills Newlywed Couple in Lohardaga, Probe Underway
A newlywed couple lost their lives in a fire inside their bedroom in Lohardaga district of Jharkhand. The tragedy occurred in Dhanamunji village, under the Bhandra police station area, and has raised questions that police are now working to answer.
The husband and wife were asleep when the fire broke out. People living nearby and family members came to know about the blaze only after it had grown severe. Although the fire was eventually controlled and the couple was rescued, both were already dead.
There is a possibility that the couple doused themselves with petrol and set themselves alight. Police, however, are not completely convinced of this. They have indicated that the fire could also have been triggered accidentally while food was being cooked in the room.
The family is mourning, and the village is in a state of shock. Investigators are examining every possible angle to reach a clear conclusion.
The deceased have been identified as Ajit Oraon and his wife Balmiki Oraon, who had married about a year earlier.
Door Shut From Inside
According to family members, the couple ate dinner late at night and then retired to their room. The door had also been shut from the inside.
Around midnight, flames suddenly rose from the room, and the screams of the couple drew the attention of relatives and neighbors. They broke open the door and pulled the two out, but by then both had been badly burned.
An ambulance took them to a community health centre without delay.
Deaths in Hospital
While undergoing treatment, Ajit Oraon died at the health centre. His wife's condition was critical, so doctors referred her to RIMS in Ranchi. She died there during treatment.
Police are probing the incident from both suicide and accident angles. The bodies have been taken into custody and sent for postmortem examination.
