Authorities Struggle to Tame Death‑Marked Chuttupalu Road

Since 2021, the Chuttupalu Valley on NH 33 has become a notorious death‑mark for commuters in Jharkhand. The district administration, NH AI engineers, and senior police officials have collectively filed more than a thousand written appeals to the central Ministry of Road Transport, urging immediate realignment of the road geometry.

Project Director Amit Raushan of NH AI confirmed that temporary measures—such as removable concrete barriers, anti‑skid coating and additional lighting—have been installed. However, the steep gradient and thin rock substratum limit long‑term engineering fixes. District Deputy Commissioner Rituraj describes the valley as a “curse” that repeatedly claims lives despite intensive monitoring.

Police Superintendent Mukesh Kumar Lunayat reports that each fresh accident triggers a full forensic investigation, which invariably points to brake failure and overload as root causes. In several cases, First Information Reports (FIRs) have been lodged against NH AI officials for alleged negligence, highlighting the administrative friction surrounding the issue.

The state government has pledged funds for a comprehensive road‑realignment project, but land acquisition, geological surveys and environmental clearances have stalled progress. Meanwhile, daily commuters continue to face an unpredictable hazard that transforms a routine drive into a life‑threatening gamble.
