Over 100 Villages to Join Municipal Limits Under New Jharkhand Master Plan
The upcoming master plan revisions will not only redesign city limits but also bring an estimated 100 to 120 villages within a 10‑12 km radius of Ranchi under municipal jurisdiction. Similar peripheral zones—about 5 km from municipal council boundaries and 4 km from Nagar Panchayat borders—will be absorbed in the other 14 cities.
Officials warn that if these fast‑growing peri‑urban areas are left out of the planning process, it will become increasingly difficult to provide essential services such as roads, storm‑water drainage, parking and public parks. By folding these villages into the formal planning area now, the state hopes to streamline service delivery and avoid chaotic, ad‑hoc development later.
The expanded jurisdiction will raise Ranchi’s planning area from the current 652 sq km (175 sq km under the Municipal Corporation and 477 sq km under the RRDA) to approximately 1,534 sq km. Comparable increases are expected for the other towns, ensuring a cohesive development strategy across Jharkhand’s urban landscape.
