Jharkhand’s tribal health safeguards questioned after suspected wrong‑blood‑type transfusion

Ranchi, July 19 – Arjun Munda, former chief minister of Jharkhand and ex‑union minister, wrote to CM Hemant Soren seeking a fast‑track, unbiased investigation into the alleged medical negligence that led to the death of Budhan Puri, a tribal woman from Khunti. Munda claims the patient received a blood transfusion of an incorrect group at the Birsa Institute of Medical Sciences, a mistake that could be fatal.

The letter underscores that the incident throws the state’s commitment to tribal health into doubt, especially as Jharkhand is known for its focus on tribal welfare, social justice, and human values. Munda reminded the government that the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution safeguards tribal rights, including access to adequate health services.

He also referenced the October 2025 case in West Singhbhum where five tribal children with thalassemia were given HIV‑contaminated blood, arguing that both events point to systemic gaps in oversight and accountability.

Munda called for strict adherence to transfusion guidelines, compulsory reporting of adverse events, and punitive action against officials who breach standards. He concluded that decisive action would not only deliver justice to Budhan Puri’s family but also strengthen Jharkhand’s health framework for its tribal population.
