Janaki Amma passes away at 88, leaves behind massive legacy

Veteran playback singer S. Janaki Amma died on Saturday at a private hospital in Mysore, Karnataka, ending a storied career that spanned six decades. At 88, she left an indelible imprint on Indian cinema, having lent her voice to more than 48,000 tracks across twenty languages, including Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.

Janaki Amma’s journey began in 1957 with a debut in the Tamil movie "Vidhiyin Vilayattu," followed quickly by her entry into Malayalam films. Within her first year, she recorded songs in six distinct languages, a feat that marked the start of an extraordinary professional trajectory.

From the 1970s onward, she became the preeminent female vocalist in Malayalam cinema, working with legendary music directors and creating melodies that continue to resonate with audiences. Her excellence was recognized with the Kerala State Film Award for Best Singer in 1970, a title she dominated for the following fifteen years. Over her lengthy career, she amassed four National Film Awards and thirty‑three state accolades, underscoring her status as one of India’s most celebrated singers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a statement posted on X, described her death as an "irreplaceable loss" for the cultural world, extending his condolences to her family, fans, and the entire music community.
