Jammu’s RS Pura Observation Home became the scene of a daring jailbreak Monday, with three dangerous inmates overpowering guards and escaping. Among them: two from Pakistan and a notorious local thug. Six policemen stationed there faced immediate suspension Tuesday as the administration scrambles to plug security holes.
The breakout happened at 5:15 PM, when Karnajeet Singh alias Gugga—a feared gangster from RS Pura’s Dablehar—alongside Mohammad Sunaullah and Ehsan Anwar from Pakistan, assaulted officers and fled. Gugga’s sudden disappearance of his mother Tuesday has investigators probing deeper, suspecting orchestrated aid from outside.
Police mobilized rapidly, registering a case and deploying search teams for raids in nearby regions. The 1988-founded home, under Jammu’s Social Welfare Department, caters to juvenile under-trials per the 2015 Juvenile Justice Act. It offers essentials like lodging, meals, medical care, education, and counseling to rehabilitate minors during legal proceedings.
Distinct from long-stay special homes or protective children’s homes, Observation Homes hold kids under 18 temporarily until JJB adjudication. Federal-NGO collaborations under Section 47 ensure age- and gender-segregated facilities, fostering reform over punishment.
