Islamic Scholar Labels UCC as Interference in Sharia, Rejects It

Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, a leading Islamic authority, described the Uniform Civil Code as an unwelcome intrusion into the domain of Sharia law. Speaking to reporters, he said that the code, already in effect in several Indian states, threatens the religious rights of Muslims and undermines the dignity of women as taught by Islam.

He stressed that Islam provides women with honor, respect, and cultural etiquette, and that any legislation contradicting these principles will be resisted by the community. Barelvi also criticized Taslima Nasreen for her repeated articles that target Islam and madrasas, labeling her remarks as hate speech that should be legally restrained.

The cleric concluded by urging Indian civil society to distance itself from Nasreen’s viewpoints and to protect the sanctity of religious education institutions that have historically played a pivotal role in the nation’s struggle for freedom.
