Investigations Link Abu Sumama to Explosives Seizure in Jammu

A recent investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has connected the seizure of a Chinese grenade and fifteen cartridges in Jammu to a Pakistan‑based handler identified as Mohammad Yakub, alias Abu Sumama. The incident unfolded when Jammu‑Kashmir police stopped a motorcycle at a checkpoint in Gujjar Tent Pandach during a routine search operation.

The rider, who introduced himself as Mohammad Nakib Bhatt, was found carrying the explosive devices without any lawful purpose. The discovery led to a formal First Information Report, citing violations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Arms Act, and the Explosive Substances Act.

Interrogation of two Pakistani nationals detained in the case—Abdullah Rajput and Khubab—revealed that Abu Sumama had instructed them to carry out attacks targeting security forces and ordinary citizens throughout the Kashmir Valley. The operatives confirmed that the handler had supplied the ammunition and directed the operational plans.

Given his alleged role in orchestrating cross‑border terrorism, the NIA court issued a non‑bailable warrant under Section 75 of the BNSL, marking Abu Sumama as a declared terrorist under Section 35 of the UAPA. The warrant has been transmitted to the NIA’s Director General in Jammu for immediate execution.
