Investigation Reveals False Call Behind Alleged Thar SUV Heist

A false robbery claim involving a Thar SUV and a sum of Rs 5,00,000 was debunked by Delhi police within a matter of hours on July 12. The claim was lodged at the K.N.K. Marg police station after a PCR call reported that three men had stopped a driver in Rohini sector‑26 and demanded the cash.

The complainant, identified as Gurnam Singh, a 42‑year‑old driver and helper at a Kashmiri Gate spare‑parts workshop, said he was transporting the money on his employer’s instructions. He alleged that the thieves threatened him with a gun.

A rapid response team, led by Inspector Pramod Kumar, examined CCTV footage from the alleged location, vehicle tracking data, and conducted a physical search of the driver’s car. The evidence showed no interaction with any Thar SUV and confirmed the driver’s uninterrupted journey.

During the vehicle examination, officers discovered a cloth bag containing the full Rs 5 lakh hidden under the bonnet, close to the battery. Confronted with the findings, Singh confessed to staging the robbery and making a false PCR call to fabricate the crime.

He has been charged under the Indian Penal Code for providing false information and for criminal breach of trust. The probe remains open to determine if any co‑conspirators were involved.
