Investigation Launched After DGP Anurag’s Unexplained Demise in Agartala

Agartala, July 20 – The death of Tripura’s Director General of Police, Anurag, was reported on Monday after he was found dead in a bathroom adjoining his official chamber at the state police headquarters. Following immediate medical attention at the Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, doctors pronounced him dead. The body has now been handed over to a forensic institute for a full post‑mortem investigation, and officials have indicated that the final cause of death will emerge only after the autopsy report is completed.

Anurag, an IPS officer of the 1994 batch, assumed the DGP post on May 17, 2023, succeeding Amitabh Ranjan. Prior to his elevation, he served as the state’s Intelligence DGP, and earlier held the posts of Sub‑Divisional Police Officer in Longtharai Valley, SP of the erstwhile undivided West and South Tripura districts, and Special Branch SP. His career also includes a United Nations assignment in Kosovo (2003‑04) and multiple senior positions within the Central Bureau of Investigation, where he rose to the rank of Deputy Inspector General and later Joint Director.

Educationally, Anurag earned a postgraduate degree in Food Technology from the Central Food Technological Research Institute, a master’s in Police Management from Osmania University, and a postgraduate diploma in Cyber Crime from NALSAR University of Law. He was also a certified fraud examiner with the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, USA.

The abrupt loss has triggered a formal inquiry. While the state government and police hierarchy have refrained from speculating on the circumstances, the post‑mortem findings are expected to shed light on whether the incident was a result of natural causes, an accident, or any foul play.
