Investigation Ongoing in IIT Bombay Student Case, No Charges Filed Yet

Mumbai police are still probing the death of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode, whose body was discovered in his hostel room on Friday evening. The only document filed so far is an Accidental Death Report (ADR), and no criminal case has been opened against any party.

The police have taken statements from the student’s family, who traveled from Yavatmal to the Pune police station, as well as from several students who were present during the examination. The investigation will determine whether the death was self‑inflicted or the result of another cause.

The institute confirmed that the student had not been subjected to any disciplinary action before his death. Faculty members, including the exam supervisor, had confronted him after noticing that he was using a mobile phone to access ChatGPT for answers. They assured him that the incident would not affect his academic record.

After the discussion, the student returned to his hostel room and was later found lifeless. The campus community reacted with protests, accusing the administration of withholding information and alleging that a threat of a one‑year suspension was made against him.

The post‑mortem report is pending, and the police have indicated that further legal steps will be decided based on the evidence collected from both the family and the campus witnesses.
