Investigation Continues as Suspect Hospitalised After Police Gunfire
Guwahati, October 6 – The murder case of university student Nimisha Thakuria has entered a new phase after suspect Ashik Ali was shot by police during a custody transfer in Dhalapur. The bullet struck Ali’s knee, and he was immediately taken to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Police officers said the suspect made a sudden attempt to break free, prompting them to fire a warning shot that injured him. Officials added that the operation was part of a broader effort to move Ali to court, as his eight‑day custodial term was set to expire.
Nimisha’s body was discovered on September 25 at a homestay in Guwahati, leading to a high‑profile investigation involving forensic experts and post‑mortem analysis. Deputy Commissioner B. Deori noted that Ali’s claim of Nimisha’s suicide by hanging has not been substantiated, and investigators are reviewing all physical evidence, including the injuries on Nimisha’s corpse and any possible links to the suspect’s relationship with the victim.
The police continue to collect statements, examine forensic reports, and verify the circumstances surrounding the homestay encounter. As Ali remains hospitalized, he is expected to face further interrogation once his medical condition stabilises.
