Investigation launched after bodies found in burlap bags near Bhavani River, Kerala

Authorities in Kerala have opened a full‑scale investigation after the dismembered remains of a woman and her child were recovered from burlap sacks discarded beside the Bhavani River in Attapadi, Palakkad district. The National Commission for Women intervened by taking suo motu cognizance of the case and has demanded a status report from the police within seven days.

Reports indicate that the bodies, which were badly mutilated, were placed in canvas bags that were later found on the riverbank. The nature of the injuries suggests a pre‑planned act of extreme violence.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the Kerala Director General of Police, insisting on the immediate arrest of the alleged main perpetrator, thorough identification of any collaborators, and the secure handling of all forensic evidence. She also requested that the victims’ relatives receive legal aid, counselling, and other essential support during the investigation and trial phases.

The commission has asked for an Action Taken Report (ATR) to be filed within a week, reaffirming its firm stance that the lives, honour, and safety of women and children must never be compromised.

Police investigations have zeroed in on a West Bengal migrant labourer who entered the area about 25 days ago with his wife and five‑year‑old daughter. Early inquiries suggest that this individual could be linked to the murders. Critical evidence emerged from one of the burlap sacks, which bore markings pointing to a shipment that originated in Coimbatore and was destined for a shop in Kottathara, Attapadi. Investigators are now probing wholesale and retail stores near the Kerala‑Tamil Nadu border, reviewing CCTV recordings, and tracing the origin of the sacks to determine who purchased and transported them.
