Inter‑state Travel Disrupted as Taxi Drivers Threaten Wider Blockade

The suspension of commercial taxi services between Shillong and Guwahati has created a ripple effect across the Northeast, as the Meghalaya Taxi Drivers Association warned of a possible extension of the blockade if the current turmoil is not resolved. The decision came after a flare‑up of violence in Shillong that saw police confront rallying students demanding a five‑point charter.

During the clash, police allegedly attacked vehicles, set fire to two government cars and damaged numerous private automobiles, many of which belonged to tourists from Assam. A family from Assam also suffered as their child was injured in the melee.

In retaliation, cab operators in Assam tried to seize Meghalaya‑registered taxis at key points such as Jorbat and Khanapara, causing traffic congestion on the vital Guwahati‑Shillong highway and leaving many passengers stranded near the inter‑state border.

The halt in taxi services directly impacts daily commuters, tourism flows and trade logistics between the two states. Hospitality industry representatives have voiced concerns that continued instability could harm Meghalaya’s growing tourist sector. The chief ministers of both states have discussed the matter, agreeing to restore order and reopen transport routes. Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government has taken legal action, arresting three senior members of the KSU on accusations of involvement in the riots.
