Internal Rift in Punjab Congress Deepens After Alleged Assault on Female Leader

A fresh controversy has erupted in Punjab’s Congress ranks after Shivani Sharma, a senior female leader, alleged that Saurabh Madan Mitu, president of the urban district committee, broke into her home and threatened violence.

Sharma, a former district president and current PPCC representative, described how Mitu entered her house with a weapon‑bearing aide early on October 4. She said her daughter’s warning about the visitor prompted her to meet Mitu, but instead of a courteous entry, he became aggressive, shouting profanities and attempting to force his way inside.

According to Sharma, Mitu pushed her, engaged in a physical fight that ripped her collar, and kicked several flower pots placed in the garden. When her husband stepped in and she tried to record the incident, Mitu allegedly threatened her, declaring that the police were in his grip.

Sharma filed a complaint at the nearest police station, requesting an FIR and strict action against Mitu. She further informed senior Congress leadership, insisting on an impartial investigation.

The incident is being viewed as a symptom of larger factionalism within the state party, where recent changes in leadership and the appointment of a new president have intensified rivalry, according to political observers.
