Indigenous Front Wins Few Seats as Tipra Motha Dominates Tripura Vote

The latest village‑committee elections in Tripura’s tribal belt have underscored the ascendancy of the Tipra Motha Party. Out of 4,594 contested positions, the party won 3,428 seats, a 74.61 percent victory margin. The BJP trailed with 859 seats, while its tribal partner, the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura, managed only 33 seats. The CPI(M) and Congress together accounted for just 101 seats. Independent candidates gathered 173 seats. The polls, held on September 28 and counted under heavy security, were the first to be conducted after a ten‑year hiatus mandated by the Supreme Court. The results are expected to shape the composition and policy direction of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, which oversees 52 of the state's 58 blocks.
