The Sagarmala initiative has emerged as a cornerstone of India’s maritime renaissance, delivering tangible gains in capacity, connectivity, and operational prowess over the past decade. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, it focuses on port modernization, waterway development, and cargo throughput enhancement.

Saturday’s government release underscores 11 years of solid progress. Sagarmala 2.0 targets Rs 3.6 lakh crore in investments through an initial Rs 85,482 crore outlay, promising widespread economic ripple effects.

A total of 845 projects, aggregating Rs 6.06 lakh crore, are underway. Notably, 315 projects valued at Rs 1.57 lakh crore wrapped up by March 24, 2026. With 210 in progress and 320 in pipeline, the momentum is unstoppable.

These milestones have supercharged port capacities, reduced ship turnaround from 96 hours (2014) to 49.5 hours (2025), and ignited industrial clusters near ports while fostering coastal growth. FY 2025-26 saw ports process 915.17 million tonnes of cargo—7.06% above target and prior year.

India’s global port stature has risen, with nine in the top 100 worldwide and Visakhapatnam in the top 20 for containers. Inland waterways cargo leaped 700% to 145.50 million tonnes annually by 2024-25.

Rs 1,057 crore invested in 11 fishing harbors has empowered 30,000+ fishermen, complemented by skill initiatives for coastal employment. Projections indicate 1 crore jobs—40 lakh direct, 60 lakh indirect—solidifying Sagarmala’s role in economic transformation.

As India eyes maritime dominance, Sagarmala stands as a beacon of strategic infrastructure-led development.
